New Altar

It looks like they found some nicer candlesticks, then. I hope they leave them after the Holy Father finishes celebrating. H/T MassInformation

Perhaps one day they will do something about that rather blank space in front of the Cathedra Petri. It just doesn't look right the way it is.

However, I imagine Cardinal Marella, Archpriest of the Basilica from 1961 to 1983, would be very pleased to see the return of the beautiful Rampolla altar. (I've now read on one website that it dates from 1907.)

Once again, Pope Benedict XVI has brought back into use something old and beautiful.

The tide, it would appear, is turning !

Sorry to disagree with this, but don't you think it's actually rather hideous, quite apart from distracting attention from what is actually taking place on top of the altar? That's what's important, not a mass of ornamentation.
