Worrying

The Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate have been forbidden by the Holy See to celebrate Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

In addition to the above, the Holy Father Francis has directed that every religious of the congregation of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate is required to celebrate the liturgy according to the ordinary rite and that, if the occasion should arise, the use of the extraordinary form (Vetus Ordo) must be explicitly authorized by the competent authorities, for every religious and/or community that makes the request.

Read all about it on Sandro Magister.

I suppose how worrying this is depends on:
1. what is meant by 'if the occasion should arise'; &
2. who are designated as the 'competent authorities' who will have to explicitly authorize the use.

Just what is the Bishop of Rome been playing at? I gave him a chance. I've had about enough of his stunts.

If these jerks are going to play games, I say other religious congregations should never make the request n the first place. Don't ask "permission." It was already granted by Pope Benedict.

This is hard to understand – and the ‘sledgehammer’ approach seems very unlike Pope Francis. Were it not for the words: “Holy Father Francis has directed…”, I would have suspected that this was inserted by someone in the Vatican with an agenda. We had heard of similar goings on under Pope Benedict - wording changed, instructions delayed, directives ‘shelved’, etc.

One could still question whether Pope Francis explicitly ordered this, or if it is someone’s interpretation of an ‘off the cuff’ remark by the Holy Father, as he has a penchant for those…

But there was a Visitation of the Order - begun under Pope Benedict - and now a ‘Commissioner’ has been appointed, so there may be much more behind this than we are aware of. Still it seems preemptive to have this condition explicitly stated in the announcement of the Commissioner’s appointment.

Whether this will have wider implications for the whole Church remains to be seen. But it is troubling and one can’t avoid a feeling of foreboding.

Surely we should wait to see the full context. It seems this change was started by Pope Emeritus Benedict and is more to do with grave disagreements within the FFI about the imposition of the Usus Antiquor than about the application of Benedict's decree. Let's not panic.

Many things comparable to this happened under Pope Benedict.
